Day 1 of the journey, March 15, 2017, my first post

Posted on March 15, 2017 Written by Alan Thomas Leave a Comment

I am writing this post really for 2 reasons, first as a declaration and second as an invitation. As anyone that has known me for any length of time should know I clearly have a weight problem. I have struggled with being overweight most of my adult life but over the last 10 years or so it has completely gotten out of control. It hasn’t been sudden, sure I’ve had the occasional 10 or 20 pound weight loss but then put that weight back on and continued my gradual assent upward. Gaining weight and becoming obese cannot be hidden, although by not really stepping up and taking responsibility for my health I have been behaving as though my size is normal. Well I am 5’11” and when I stepped on the scales yesterday morning it read 298 pounds. That is not normal. I am declaring to everyone that reads this that I have set a goal to lose 123 pounds by November 22, 2017. Wow! that’s hard to write! But I know that 8 days, 8 weeks, or 8 months from now I will remember this and it will keep me on course.
The second part is an invitation, I have a friend, John Davisson, that over 10 years ago, after struggling with his weight for years, took off 65 pounds, and has kept it off. He has agreed to guide me through the process. I know that some of you reading this probably struggle with being overweight or maybe you know someone that does. John and I are starting a private Facebook group that will have extreme accountability. It will not be for the faint of heart. I invite you to go on this journey with me. Either way I am going, with or without you. If this private Facebook group interests you please Private Message me and I will get you the details.
One last thought, if you are like me, whether you have 10 pounds or 210 pounds of excess weight take some kind of action. Posting this for me is stepping into unknown territory, there is no going back when I press “Post”.

Day 2, March 16, 2017

Day number 2 of my public weight loss journey down 1.8 pounds from yesterday. 119.4 pounds to go. 175 here I come. A lot goes through your mind when you commit to posting your weight daily until I reach my goal. I can tell you this, knowing that all of my Facebook friends will see my weight each day really changed my behavior yesterday. As I was talking to my coach, John Davisson, I thought about every bite of food that went into my mouth! See you tomorrow!

Day 3, March 17, 2017

Day 3 of my weight loss journey. Thanks to everyone who is commenting and encouraging me. The intimidation factor has not worn off, as I said yesterday posting this is on my mind with every bite of food. So for me it is effective. Some of you are probably wondering why someone would do something this outrageous. Results! That’s the short answer but the longer and more important answers are Angie Thomas, Ashley Thomas, Adam Thomas and Blake Thomas. And all those that come after them. I’m 55 and I have more goals and dreams than ever before and it’s a race against the clock, I don’t want to be pulled from the race (dead!) because of my health. Pretty tough to have the “Life to the full” that Jesus promises, if I’m having life to the full that the refrigerator promises.
2 men reached out to me yesterday and said they are coming along this public weight loss journey with me, I’ll let them reveal who they are. Is Anyone else sick and tired of being sick and tired?
Until tomorrow, I’ll see you at the scales!
175 here I come!

Day 4, March 18, 2017

Day 4

This week has not been anything like I thought it would be a week ago. After decades of yo yo dieting and ballooning to 304 pounds a few weeks ago( I had not mentioned that publicly yet!), I decided to do something radically different… change. It’s been pretty extreme. I kick around ideals all the time that I don’t take action on for one reason or another, but this time it’s been different, as I told Hyo Kim, my Life on Fire Challenge Coach, it’s like cliff diving, once you jump, you cannot go back. I posted my scales and weight on Facebook starting Wednesday March 15, 2017, and pledged to continue posting my weight until I reach 175 pounds.
I’m using sound nutrition tracked by my health coach John Davisson, who lost 65 pounds 10 years ago using this program and has kept it off since.
I invited anyone that reads these posts to join me in this Extreme Accountability Challenge, the only requirement is to post your scales with your weight daily. I have had a lot of conversations since I began with several people that are joining me in spirit
( that means they are not posting their weight) and that’s all good, this is extreme accountability. Only one has jumped all in, Summers Duffy, he posted yesterday. Summers and I are now on a pretty unique journey together, I am not suggesting to anyone what to eat or how to exercise, that’s up to the individual, this is the extreme accountability part. I wish I could capture in words the difference it has made over the last 3 days and for the first time in my life I know that I will be thin again. But make no mistake about it the only way this extreme accountability challenge works is by going all in, weighing in the full view of the world . It’s not right for everyone, I know that.
This morning I read a comment from Robbie McAllister, “Proud of you, Live out loud” ( A personal hero of mine a real man that has lived his entire life out loud!) It really got me thinking about how I have lied to myself about my weight for so long and thought I was hiding it. (Like you can hide over 100 pounds of fat) and by bringing it out in the open I am gaining freedom. I know I am just some guy that has failed miserably at controlling weight and now I am taking action, it certainly doesn’t make me special. But where else have I said that” I will get to that later” or “it’s not important now.” Today anyone that reads this gets to make a choice, whether it’s weight loss, another form of addiction, a career change, a book you are planning to write, an apology you need to make, or anything else that you know you need to do but are putting it off. Take action and like Robbie says “Live out Loud”
175 pounds here I come!!

A big shout out to #LifeonFire, Nick Unsworth, and my #LifeonFireChallenge coach Hyo Kim, I would not have done this without you!

Anyone that wants to join Summers and me, message me and we will lock arms with you.
Who else among you is ready to change?
